Palmers Green takes on digital community engagement tool

November 21st 2016

The Palmers Green Police Safer Neighbourhood Team, together with Swedish community safety app Trygve, are pioneering a new, digital method of local engagement to connect communities within Palmers Green, Enfield.

Trygve is a free app that provides a specially designed digital platform where users can collaborate, empowering community members to support each other and work together to solve local issues and combat crime.

Police officer Kat Johnson said "This tool allows police to have a presence in a digital environment that is safe and accessible to anyone. We really look forward to see how it enhances our engagement with the community.”

"Local residents are so often the ones who witness criminal activity first or can sense a change in the environment they’re in. Tapping into that ground level intelligence is so important.” Officer Johnson continued.

The app features an interactive map where users can see and share local incidents and information. Users are able to communicate with each other and contribute to posted events, capturing ground-level intelligence in real time. There is also a personal safety alarm built into the app that alerts other users when triggered.

Trygve is hugely successful in Sweden and is now available in the UK, free of charge. It is available on iOS through the App Store and Android through Google Play. There is also a computer version of the app for non-smartphone users.

“This is such an interesting project for Trygve, where we are gaining an insight on how communities in very large and complex cities can band together and utilize each other more,” Sheona Urquhart Trygve UK Manager said.

“We are aiming for a very big and positive culture shift where members of the community feel they can turn to each other and trust each other more.”

Everyone in the Palmers Green area is encouraged to take part. The Palmers Green Safer Neighbourhood Team has already created a group in the app that community members can join, and users are encouraged to start their own, too.
